With the new Dutch dietary guidelines for protein sources, the Health Council of the Netherlands provides concrete recommendations for a shift towards a more plant-based dietary pattern. This shift lowers the risk of chronic diseases and is better for the environment. Compared to the current Dutch dietary pattern, the guidelines mainly mean less meat and more legumes and nuts. This is the main conclusion from the advisory report Dutch dietary guidelines: protein sources and dietary patterns 2025 that was offered to the Ministries of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) and Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) on 4 December 2025.
