Human composting is an alternative to burial or cremation in which the body of the deceased is broken down in a compost heap of plant material, in a closed container. The Health Council of the Netherlands advises not to admit human composting yet because there is insufficient data on safety and sustainability. With regard to alkaline hydrolysis (also known as resomation), the council concluded in 2020 that the technique could be admitted. Based on new data, the council does not see any reason to revise this previous advice.
