Tolerable upper intake levels for vitamins and minerals

Tolerable upper intake levels for vitamins and minerals serve as a tool to prevent overdoses. These upper levels are seldom exceeded as a result of eating a diet without supplements and fortified foods. Accordingly, the main method of overdose prevention is through regulations on maximum levels in supplements and fortified foods. The EU intends to establish European maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in supplements and fortified foods, based on the upper levels derived by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The Health Council recommends continuing to apply the EFSA tolerable upper levels for the Dutch population, in anticipation of the release of the European legislation.
