Autologous platelet-rich plasma

Especially in cosmetic and sports medicine treatment with platelet-rich plasma has become popular. Such treatment is thought to be beneficial in the process of wound healing and tissue repair. However, for most indications for which it is used, it is unclear whether or not there are real positive effects, such as in the case of treatment of alopecia (baldness), skin rejuvenation, and injections into the genitals. For a few indications there is limited evidence for efficacy, such as in the treatment of tennis elbow, chronic wounds, and in maxillary surgery. It seems that treatment is not associated with major complications. However, well-designed and systematic research into unwanted effects is lacking. For responsible use of platelet-rich plasma, solid and well-founded guidelines are necessary that specify what comprises qualitatively good care.
