Di- and triisocyanates

Isocyanates are starting materials for polyurethane, which is used among others in varnishes, adhesives and polyurethane foam. Occupational exposure to isocyanates can lead to allergic respiratory complaints. The aim is to limit this risk to 1%.

The Expert Committee on Occupational Safety (DECOS) of the Health Council of the Netherlands has estimated the isocyanate air concentration corresponding with this risk level. The Committee recommends for di- and triisocyanates (isocyanates with two or three NCO-groups) a concentration of 0.1 µg NCO/m3. NCO represents the reactive group that is present in all types of isocyanates. The Committee further recommends to take into account that dermal contact can contribute to the development of allergic complaints.
